The History of the Kop Hill Climb

The Kop Hill Climb, located near Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire, is one of Britain’s most historic motorsport events, steeped in over a century of tradition. First used as a competitive motorsport venue in 1910, the hill climb became a key fixture in the early years of motor racing and remains an enduring symbol of the passion for motoring in the UK.

Origins and Early Years (1910–1925)

The Kop Hill Climb originally began in 1910 as a competitive event for motorcycles and later included cars. The challenge was simple: competitors raced to see how quickly they could ascend the 1-in-4 (25%) gradient of Kop Hill, which stretches for just under a mile and features steep inclines and sweeping bends.

The climb attracted enthusiasts from all over the country, with both amateur and professional drivers participating. The event gained popularity in the 1920s, drawing famous drivers and riders, including Malcolm Campbell, who would later become a land-speed record holder, and Count Louis Zborowski, known for creating the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cars.

Unfortunately, a minor accident involving a spectator in 1925 led to the Motor Car Act of 1925, banning competitive motorsport on public roads in the UK. The ban brought the Kop Hill Climb, along with many other events, to an end.

The Revival (1999–Present)

After decades of dormancy, the Kop Hill Climb was revived in 1999 as a non-competitive event. Today, it serves as a celebration of vintage and classic motoring, with participants showcasing historic motorcycles and cars as they ascend the hill in a festival-like atmosphere.

Unlike its early years, the modern Kop Hill Climb is no longer about racing but focuses on honouring the vehicles, their history, and the drivers who once competed. The event has since become a significant fundraiser for local charities, contributing hundreds of thousands of pounds to good causes.

Kop Hill Today

The Kop Hill Climb is now one of the most beloved motoring festivals in the UK, attracting thousands of spectators each year. Whether you're a petrolhead, a history buff, or simply looking for a great day out, the event offers something for everyone.

The combination of historic motoring, stunning countryside, and a sense of nostalgia makes the Kop Hill Climb a must-visit for enthusiasts and families alike.
